Did ChatGPT Help You to Pass JAMB I Tested It

Title: Did ChatGPT Help You to Pass JAMB? I Tested It.

Nigerian students also have the final test of an academic year, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam, which is taken by millions of students in Nigeria. The preferred tools were the textbooks, past questions, and the intensive coaching classes, which have been used decades. However it is 2026 and a new teacher has joined the chat and literally so.

Being a technological and digital productivity platform that targets Nigerians, we at CONNEXTS were compelled to pose the following question: Could an AI, such as ChatGPT, really help you pass JAMB? Or is it another distraction that will make you gossiping when you are meant to be studying?

I decided to put it to the test. I used a real JAMB candidate who was preparing to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) and had four major subjects i.e. English, Mathematics, Physics and Government.

This is the real truth that I came upon.

The Preparation: ChatGPT as a Personal Tutor.
To ensure the validity of this test, I did not simply give ChatGPT questions to respond to. I applied it as though it was a tutor that you would employ in Ikeja or pay a high price in a lesson center. I enhanced the free version of ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) to replicate what an average Nigerian student has an opportunity to access now, through the phone or laptop.

Three major tutoring activities were highlighted by me:
Teaching Concepts: A description of the syllabus topics.
Problem Solution: Solving problems in the common JAMB questions.
Practice Material: The creation of new questions to practice.

Test 1: English Language (The Strong Suit of the AI)
The Task: "Give me five examples each in a sentence, explain the meaning of the word denote and the meaning of the word connote.
The Result: Flawless.
ChatGPT provided a clear and textbook-style definition and correct examples. It dealt with synonyms, antonyms and passages of understanding easily.

The Verdict: ChatGPT is a star in the field of English and Literature. It is capable of deconstructing complicated grammatical principles, condensing lengthy prose and, in a manner, putting the words in context better than an ordinary dictionary. It does not get weary of your one more examples.

Test Two: Mathematics (The Moment of Truth)
The Problem: Solve this quadratic equation step by step: 2x2 -5x +3= 0. Should I explain it as though I was a student who failed it last term.
The Findings: Impressively accurate.
ChatGPT not only gave me the step-by-step working with the factorization method but also described why it worked and even offered me the way of checking my answer. I gave it harder subjects, calculus, statistics, and bearing, and it always gave correct methodologies.

The Catch: It does not read the diagrams that you draw by hand. The AI is not very good at geometry problems that require you to describe shapes in a way that can not be described using words. You should be very careful when telling what you see on the page.

Test 3: Physics (The Conceptual Challenge)
The Task: "A mass of body with 5kg is dropped with an initial height of 10m. Determine the kinetic energy before impacting the ground. (Take g = 10 m/s2)"
The Answer: Yes, and with all the work being complete.
ChatGPT was very good with formulas, unit conversions, and descriptions of concepts such as gravity and potential energy. It could state why an object falls not just the numbers.

The Rating: Good in theory and in the fundamentals. Nonetheless, JAMB Physics usually contains difficult problems on the light waves, sound, and electronics. ChatGPT occasionally provides too broad responses to such niche issues. You should check the physics facts of it in your textbook.

Test 4: Government (The Current Affairs Blind Spot)
The Task: "describe the roles of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) according to the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
The Conclusion: Strong in the past, weak in the here and now.
The functional roles of INEC were all listed correctly by ChatGPT. However, when I enquired, Who is the current chairman of INEC? it stopped and made a disclaimer: it was not capable of giving real-time information unless I would use browsing feature (which needs an upgrade to ChatGPT Plus and must be enabled manually).

The Trifling Matter: JAMB Government is bogged down in present-day and new changes. The knowledge cutoff of ChatGPT is free. The free AI may provide you with old information in case a law was modified last year or a new political party was established. In the case of historical subjects (such as Nigerian colonialism or organs of government), it is excellent.

The Big Question: Will it Replace Your Textbook?
The answer is a firm NO, but...

The following is the candid analysis of the Nigerian student:

What ChatGPT can do GREAT What ChatGPT cannot do BAD

Breaking the hard stuff down to easy Pidgin or English.   Government or Economics Current Affairs in Real Time.
Writing endless practice questions on a subject you are not good in.   Problem solution (Complex diagrams Physics/Chemistry graphs).
Checking your working in Mathematics.   Ensuring that it is one hundred percent correct (it is not always so, particularly in science).
Being a 24/7 patient tutor, who is impossible to get tired.   Alternate the JAMB syllabus (you still have to be aware of what to covered).

ChatGPT: How to Use it the Smart Way (The CONEXTS Method).
There is a huge advantage to possessing a smartphone and data. This is my tested plan on how to use ChatGPT to replace JAMB without the risk of falling into the trap of being lazy:

The explain like I am 10 Rule: You do not understand a subject in your textbook; type: explain [Subject] to me as though I were a Nigerian SS1 student and had not heard of the subject before. Use simple analogies."
The Question Generator: It will also provide an opportunity to practice after reading a chapter: Prompt: Generate 20 multiple-choice questions on [Topic] in the manner of JAMB UTME. Provide answers at the end."
The Essay Grader: Essay: Compose a brief essay or answer a theory question. Ask ChatGPT: Grade this answer in a JAMB exam and give me the feedback on what I did not manage to do.
NEVER to ask Direct Answers: Do not screen grab question on JAMB and request the letter. That is cheating yourself. Test it out, to know how to get the answer.

Final Score: Should You Use It?
Yes, but not a cut-off.
