You wish to work from the comfort of your home. You've heard the tales. People with good money who don't have to commute long hours and who choose their own hours. But there is a problem. All job postings in remote locations require experience. And you have none. How do you break in? The reality is that all of us had a beginning! No one starts with two years of social media management out of the box, nor three years of customer support. The secret lies in knowing where to look, how to present yourself and what to do first.

The most important mindset change is this one.

Changing the mindset for experience before applying for the next job. Experience is often thought of as a job with a title and paycheck. That is not true. Experience: Things you have done that have taught you a skill. Have you ever supported your parents' small business? That is experience. Is there a church or club WhatsApp group you've been in charge of? That is experience. Have you become familiar with Canva to create flyers? That is experience. Have you ever assisted a neighbor with a phone or computer issue? That is experience.

The first thing you need to do is to make a list of all the skills you have, no matter how trivial they may seem. Write them down. Organize them. Surprisingly, you know a lot more than you realize.

The Skills That Get You Hired with Zero Experience

Other remote career options may be based on higher education or years of specialization. Just set them aside for now. Seek jobs that emphasize attitude and basic skills rather than experience.

One of the most suitable places to start is data entry. Must be able to type reasonably fast, pay attention to detail and follow instructions. A lot of businesses require individuals to fill in information in a spreadsheet, a database or a content management system. It's not a glamorous task but it pays and it improves your resume.

Another great place to start is virtual assistance. As a small business owner, busy executive, entrepreneur, you need assistance with your email, appointments, travel reservations and simple research. One can do this work if organized and reliable. No degree required.

Customer Support careers are also available. Businesses require employees to reply to e-mails, respond to chat and deal with simple complaints. The most important thing is to have good English, patience and problem solving skills, more than any certificate.

Social media marketing is not an area that requires extensive training. If you are already familiar with Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, you know what they're like. For many small businesses, they require somebody who can post on a regular basis, reply to comments, and keeps an eye on basic analytics. The rest is taught on the channel YT.

Transcription can also be an alternative. You listen to audio or video and type it out. The primary skills are good listening and a decent typing speed.

Where to Find Your First Remote Job

There are numerous job boards that are full of jobs and have hundreds of applications. Be smarter. Use platforms that start with user friendly.

You can register on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr and provide services to your initial customers at low rates. At first, you won't make a lot of money. That is fine. You are creating a history. You're establishing a reputation. Work on some small jobs for cheap, write some nice reviews, then hike the price up.

As the companies themselves point out, indeed and LinkedIn have filters for entry-level and remote positions. Look for jobs with the keywords no experience or entry level, and remote. Make numerous applications. Expect rejection. All successful telecommuters have been rejected countless times before landing their first job.

Groups on Facebook for remote work in your country or region can be pay dirt. There is ample direct posting by employers and the competition may not be as large as on global platforms. Look for job groups that have names like "Work from Home Kenya" and "Remote Jobs Nigeria".

How to Get a Job When You're Not Ready to Work!

Your application should be able to tell a story. Don't state you have no experience, and expect to get it. Rather, demonstrate your out-of-work activities.

Make a succinct cover letter stating something like this: I have never had a formal job position but I have managed my family's WhatsApp group of two hundred persons, arranged schedules for three community events, and took it upon myself to learn basic design on Canva from YT tutorials; I am an avid learner, dependable, and willing to work hard; please give me a chance to prove myself.

This method is effective because it demonstrates initiative, learning and skills. These attributes are more important to employers than you realize.

Include a relevant projects/self taught skills section in your resume. Write down all that you have learned on your own. Volunteer work, assistance provided to family and friends and all online courses completed (including free courses).

Create a comprehensive experience for prospective students while they are applying for admission.

Don't wait to gain experience for a job. Create your own. Begin a blog on a subject that is your favourite. Propose to use social media for a local business for free for one month. Record several of the YouTube videos to practice and include them in a portfolio. Make up sample data entry spreadsheets demonstrating accuracy and speed.

These self-defined projects are your experiences. These can be presented to prospective employers. These can be articulated during job interviews. Links to your work can be shared. Some candidates have impressive work they've done on their own and may impress more than a candidate who has a degree but no sense of initiative.

Avoiding Scams

There are lots of scams in the remote job market. Be careful. Do not pay to obtain an employment. No real job will require a fee for training, background checks, equipment, etc. If the work is supposed to be easy, but the wages are very high, it's likely a scam. If the interviewer is not a good communicator, does not make the effort to have a video call, and tries to rush your decision, leave.

Use common sense. Research the companies to which you are applying. Read other workers' reviews. Trust your instincts. When something doesn't seem right, it likely isn't.

The First Ninety Days

You're not looking for a dream job right now. The objective is to find any type of legit work-at-home position. After that, you've got to work hard, learn all you can and get things done well. Experience is gained after 90 days.
